SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS OF VEPRINAC

PAROCHIAL CHURCH ST. MARC

A medieval parochial church of St. Marc with a separate bell tower is renovated in 1680 and completely remodelled in a baroque style. The church and a bell tower, as well as a small cemetery, are encircled with a wall and the remains of fortifications.

A Glagolitic inscription which was built into a right door-post of the new basement door on "plovanska kuća", as a spolium in 1900, originates from the church. The inscription was standing above the main entrance to the church. On the rear wall of the sanctuary there are still visible the odlest building elements (little windows) which reffer to Romanesque style. According to Kobler the building of the parochial church dates from the 14th c, at the time of counts Devinski, when Ana Stell or Elizabeta Devinska, who lived in Veprinac and was burried in cahtedral in Rijeka, orders a parochial church in Veprinac be built.

The church has a basilical ground plan with a sanctuary with a straight rear wall, next to which there is a sacristy. The front is decorated with stucco decorations of a classicist style. Above the portal there is an inscription which testifies the last renovation of the church in 1849. The church possesses renaissance-baroque wooden choir benches of a rustic treatment.

ST. ANNA`S CHAPEL

Sta. Anna`s chapel was built outside town`s walls. It is a one-nave chapel with a distaff-shaped bell tower and a straight non-articulated rear wall. A coat of arms is engraved on the stone above the portal, and in the lateral wall there is a stone slab with a coat of arms, a Glagolitic inscription from 1442. Traces of fresco paintings are visible in the interior, on the northern wall. In the interior there is a spiky ceiling, semicircular niches are placed on the lateral walls.
