Županja

Županja - the remains of old buildings

ŽUPANJA - an open type of settlement situated in the agricultural area. It consists of three narrower cores, also of an open type of organization. The unit of space is a line of residential structures made of stone, mainly two-storeyed ones, with a gable roof covered in half-round tiles, next to which there are stone outhouses made in the drystone technique, with a vegetable covering. The distinctive feature of almost every house is an external staircase with a vaulting, and cisterns with stone apertures, dating form the beginning of the 19th c. More developed and mutually uniform architecture of the settlement speaks of the architectural and stone-mason`s skill of the inhabitants of Krk from the 18th/19th c., while the older structures with a wooden roofed-over stairway evidence the continuation of the development of the structures, from the earlier medieval epoch.

The open type of the settlement in the agricultural area, with a unit of space – a line of buildings having mainly clan terminology, gives evidence of the Slavic type of island colonization. Among the three cores, the core called Jecalovo selo is especially prominent.
